Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle is seeking clarity over his future with the national team, demanding a contract extension ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Football Federation elective congress scheduled for September.
Talks over a renewed deal began earlier this year following Nigeria’s third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
However, negotiations have stalled, with both parties yet to reach a breakthrough.
Contract talks stall over wages
Sources close to the situation indicate that the primary sticking point remains financial. Chelle is reportedly pushing for a significant salary increase, with his current earnings estimated at $75,000 per month.
The Malian tactician is believed to be requesting a revised package worth around $130,000 monthly, reflecting both his recent achievements and long-term ambitions with the team.
Despite initial discussions, there has been little movement from the federation, leaving the situation unresolved as the new football season approaches.
Election uncertainty drives urgency
Chelle’s push for a new agreement is also linked to uncertainty surrounding the leadership of the NFF. The September elective congress could usher in a new administration, potentially altering the federation’s technical direction.
Current NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau is reportedly facing a challenging re-election bid, adding more doubt to the coach’s future.
Chelle is understood to be seeking contractual security that would allow him to continue his project regardless of any leadership changes within the federation.
The coach is keen to remain in charge for upcoming international competitions and believes a renewed deal would provide the stability needed to build a competitive squad.
