Rabe Abubakar (born on April 7, 1965 – July 13, 2026) was a retired Major General who served as the Nigerian Army’s Director of Defence Information under President Buhari from 2015 to 2017.

Abubakar entered the Nigerian Army in 1989 as a Second Lieutenant and has held a variety of command and staff positions, including Coordinator of the Joint Media Centre at the Joint Task Force Operation Headquarters in the Niger Delta.

He was also the Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Public Relations and Information (NASPRI) in Lagos and the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs for Nigerian Army Welfare Limited.

Gen Rabe Abubakar was a Lieutenant Colonel in 2008, when he oversaw the Joint Media Campaign Centre of the Joint Task Force ‘Operation Restore Hope’ in Effurun Barracks, Delta State. His hobbies include jogging, badminton, and reading.

Abubakar was well-known for his work on subjects such as the Boko Haram insurgency and as a major spokesperson for the Nigerian Armed Forces. He was later kidnapped in May 2026 and tragically died in captivity in June 2026.

Career

Major General Rabe Abubakar’s career in the Nigerian Army was highlighted by his position as Director of Defence Information. Throughout his career, he held a variety of command and staff positions, including Coordinator of the Joint Media Centre at the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation in the Niger Delta and Executive Director of Corporate Affairs for Nigerian Army Welfare Limited.

In addition, he helped to coordinate the Joint Media Campaign Centre for Operation Restore Hope in Effurun Barracks, Delta State. During his stint as the Nigerian Armed Forces’ spokesperson, he showed a strong commitment to military communication and public relations.

Personal Life

Major General Rabe Abubakar was married with children however he is known for keeping his family out of public view.

He has been involved in research and strategic studies, including work with the Nigerian Army Resource Center in Abuja.

On May 30, 2024, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife were abducted by gunmen while traveling to Katsina. Despite the efforts of the Katsina State Government and several security agencies to secure his release, the situation turned tragic.

Death

Rabe Abubakar, died in captivity as a result of complications from diabetes and hypertension. The Katsina State government announced his death, describing it as a devastating loss for both the state and the nation.

Despite persistent efforts to secure his release, the situation eventually culminated in this catastrophe. The administration expressed sincere grief and condolences to his family, highlighting the critical necessity for measures to combat banditry in the region.
