Nicolas Jackson scored twice to inspire Aston Villa to a thrilling Champions League win over Fenerbahce, helping Unai Emery’s side end their home winless run.
The striker struck twice in the first half as Villa took control of the contest, before second-half goals from Ross Barkley and Tammy Abraham completed the rout in front of watching Prince William.
Jackson’s brace took his tally to four goals in three games, underlining his recent scoring form as Villa strengthened their hopes of progressing from the Champions League league phase.
Jackson fires Villa into comfortable lead
Villa took the lead after 12 minutes when Johan Manzambi celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring with a deflected effort that wrong-footed goalkeeper Ederson.
Jackson doubled the advantage 19 minutes later, finding the net with a low finish to put the hosts in control.
Fenerbahce threatened to respond, with Zion Suzuki making two saves to deny Vedat Muriqi before tipping Oguz Aydin’s effort onto the crossbar.
However, defensive errors continued to trouble the visitors, and Jackson capitalised again before half-time. The striker seized on slack defending after Barkley won possession near the edge of the penalty area to complete his double.
The second goal also marked Jackson’s fourth in three matches, further strengthening his contribution to Villa’s attack.
Barkley and Abraham complete the rout
Jackson was denied the opportunity to claim a hat-trick when Villa were awarded a penalty with 22 minutes remaining. Manzambi was brought down by Ismail Yuksek, allowing Barkley to convert from the spot.
Barkley added another goal shortly afterwards when his effort from the edge of the box took a deflection and found the net.
Abraham then tapped home late on to complete Villa’s biggest European victory.
The result gave Emery’s side a second win in as many Champions League matches, following their opening victory over Club Brugge.
Villa will face Viking next week, knowing another home victory would strengthen their position in the race to qualify from the league phase.
